How to Read Revelation Without Fear

Somebody taught you what Revelation means. This book tells you where that reading came from — who wrote it down, what year, and what Christians read for the eighteen centuries before he did.

It is not an argument that you are wrong. It is an invitation to find out whose mind you have been using.

What this is

A book for people who were handed an ending and never got to ask about it

I was raised to believe in a pre-tribulation rapture. Not taught it as one option among several — taught it the way you are taught that water is wet. It was not a position I held. It was the air in the room.

Then somebody told me I had permission to think, and the first thing I found was that I had been handed a world in which there was one Christian way to read the end, and everyone else was either a liberal, a cult, or had not read their Bible. That is not the world. That is not close to the world.

There are four major ways Christians have read Revelation. They have names, they have histories, and three of them are older than the specific system I was raised in — two stages, the church taken out first, seven years for everybody left.

This book walks you through where your reading came from, what kind of book Revelation actually is, and what it says when you read it with the Old Testament open beside it. It names the four lenses, it tells you which one I hold, and it tells you how tightly I am holding it — including the places where the evidence cuts against me, which I show you on purpose.

Optional · three minutes

Which lens are you standing in?

Twelve statements. No wrong answers, and nothing is scored until you reach the end. Most people have never been told that the thing they believe about the end of the world has a name — or that there are three other names.

Take it now, and take it again when you finish the book. It will hold both results side by side.

This is optional. You do not have to take it to get the book. The download is two boxes and about ten seconds.

Before you begin

Which lens are you standing in?

Twelve statements. About three minutes. There are no wrong answers and nothing is scored until you reach the end — which is the point, because on paper the scoring hides on the back of the page so it cannot steer you while you answer.

Mark each one A if you mostly agree, D if you mostly disagree, and ? if you have never thought about it. That third option is not a cop-out. For several of these it is the most honest mark you can make.

None of these is a heresy. All four have been held by serious Christians who confessed the same creed. The point was never to catch you in the wrong one — it was to show you that the piece you were handed has a name, a history, and alternatives.

Who it is for

You, if any of this sounds familiar

  • You were given a chart before you were given the book.
  • You have been quietly unsure for years and never had anywhere to put it.
  • You lead people, and you have been teaching something you inherited without ever examining it.
  • You are tired of a reading that made you afraid of a book that opens with do not be afraid.

You do not have to end up where I ended up. If one statement moves from the pile you never examined to the pile you can defend out loud, this book did the only thing I built it to do.

Read it with your table

There is a host guide in the back

Six people, ninety minutes, no expertise required. Appendix B lays out six-, twelve- and fifteen-week plans, what to read aloud each night, the questions to ask, and what to do when the evening goes sideways. If you want to run it with a group, everything you need is already in the book.

The free leader community that grew out of this material meets weekly at The Shepherd’s Tent — the call, the resources, and the rest of it are a click away.
